Virtual exhibition of the University and Provincial Library of Tyrol on EODOPEN goes online

Virtual exhibition of the University and Provincial Library of Tyrol

The virtual exhibition of the University and Provincial Library of Tyrol Open up hidden knowledge shows a selection of the works digitised in the project EODOPEN.

As a major focus of the library's collection is on Tyrolensia, works from this spectrum were selected as a priority. All EODOPEN works digitised by the University and Provincial Library of Tyrol can be accessed via ULB : Digital. However, there was a desire to organise the content of the collection and to group works into subject areas. The areas of literature, alpinism and regional studies provide in-depth insights into some subject areas. The music section is made up of a collection from the former sheet music archive of ORF Tirol.

Tyrolensia & Music

The focus on Tyrolean Literature from around 1900 to 1950 is a reflection of literary production in Tyrol and Tyrol within its historical borders and traces both life paths and living environments in times of major cultural and political changes across the current regions of North, East and South Tyrol.

Tyrol is a so-called "hot spot" in the development of early Alpinism. It is interesting to note that the development of high alpine climbing and mountaineering began earlier and alpine skiing only arrived in Tyrol via Scandinavia at a later date, soon forming a second dimension in alpine sports.

The Regional Studies section is a clear focus of the exhibition. The topics range from historical content to numerous tourist and hiking guides. The German-language tourist guides of the time reach deep into the Italian-speaking regions. Cultural-historical works on some regions as well as card games, cookery books and the satirical works round off the regional studies section.

The collection of Music Materials consists of a donation from the ORF Tirol – 2570 folders with performance material, mainly sheet music for salon orchestra or large orchestra and predominantly "classical light music" such as waltzes, marches, potpourris from operetta melodies and the like. The exhibition shows a selection from the collection, some well-known and some lesser-known works.

Insights

In order to present some aspects in depth, cross-sectional topics are presented last. The construction of a central railway with engineer Dr Josef Riehl as an outstanding personality is discussed in a detailed article. Early winter tourism and the close connection between Alpine development and national attitudes is also a chapter. In addition, personalities like Tony Grubhofer – illustrator of numerous tourist guides – are introduced.
